to the people complaining about price- how much do you charge per hour? Sketch 3 is worth more than that amount for the upgrade. I've been on the internal test version and just happily forked over $50 this morning. Indispensable part of my workflow.
Especially since it only costs One Month of Adobe CC!
Don't think you can compare the entire CC suite with Sketch. Photoshop + Lightroom is $10/mo with way more features.
Definitely. This is an instant purchase.
There are few product releases that I get genuinely excited about but I feel like something special is happening here and I'm all in.
I truly appreciate the time and effort put forth by the folks at Bohemian Coding, but this update is a major disappointment.
The interface design is amateur at best. I expected more from an app that supposedly caters to ‘professional’ designers. It seems more like a working prototype than a finished product…let alone a third version. It feels extremely cheap (explains the low price tag) and still comes littered with basic performance issues. The vector tools are absolutley brutal for any serious bezier manipulation and the text panel still lacks support for opentype, alternates, glyphs, etc. Why add a half-ass bitmap editor when the existing features still need an overhaul?
The only glimpse of hope is the workflow for exporting and managing assets. It’s quite nice actually, but that won’t matter if the other things are ignored…
Perhaps you're expecting too much out of it, or you're not inside the target demographic? Example:
The vector tools are absolutley brutal for any serious bezier manipulation
As far as praise goes, Sketch excels as a user interface design tool. If you want an advanced bad-ass vector tool, you should definitely go for Illustrator.
It feels extremely cheap (explains the low price tag)
How come? Other than the fact that Adobe software generally comes with a zillion more features than Sketch, I don't see how it feels cheap. Is it the "lack" of features?
and still comes littered with basic performance issues.
Yes, 100% agreed. Perhaps my Macbook is getting a little old, but multiple pages/artboards and vectorizing text make Sketch a major pain in the ass for me, with constant crashes. Seriously hope they fixed this in version 3.
All that said, it's still worth it, if only because of the price tag, but also because it's much more practical, faster and streamlined than Adobe tools -- which feel like using a 18-wheel truck for basic tasks.

I completely understand the appeal for interface design, but I’d be willing to bet that many UI designers (especially freelancers) work on other projects including, but not limited to, corporate identity systems, illustration, occasional print work, etc. If Illustrator is still necessary for the best vector drawing experience, why use a separate tool solely for interface design, when you can use one…and benefit from every feature sketch has to offer. I wish this wasn’t the reality, but the current state of sketch hints otherwise.

I could actually do without the zillion features adobe crams in their software, which is why I’m still partially interested in sketch. The reason it feels cheap has mostly to do with the overall aesthetic and behavior, especially when working with text or complex vector shapes (imagine playing cricket with a balsa wood bat). The interface elements are straight out of Xcode and the icons are childish. It seems more like a toy for the casual designer than an industry standard professional design tool. It’s essentially iWork Pages with a few added features for exporting and managing design elements.
Just compare Sketch’s interface to the recently released Macaw app. While not perfect, you can certainly see a major difference in design quality. I’m aware these tools serve different needs, but it’s evident the Macaw team considered little details when designing their application.
Perhaps I’m being too critical and should just be thankful there’s a group of dedicated people willing to create something (at a reasonable fee) for others to use…

This. Unfortunately Sketch 3 has the same problems on my MBP so far. It's not the latest or most powerful model but I haven't had any performance issues apart from Sketch. Still hoping they'll come up with something…
Yes!! Just bought Sketch 3 and performance for multi-artboard and multi-page files is 1000x better — no crashing, no slowness, zooming is smoother (still not 100%, but it's great). Vectorizing text is now a bliss.
Weirdly said interface not only inspired Apple's on the new iWork 13 inspectors, but also was rewarded for its excellence in design and engineering with an ADA in 2012.
I guess apple standards are too low ;)
Thanks for your feedback!
Should I be impressed or concerned? Considering the amount of criticism Apple receives for their software design, I would think the later. Let’s be honest here, Apple is a consumer electronics company…not a software company. Their industrial design is top class, but their software design is tacky and made for the "lifestyle" user. I don’t blame them…that’s obviously how you sell to the masses.
Regardless of what I think, it’s still an honor to be recognized for your hard work, no less by a company of Apple’s stature . And for that, I sincerely congratulate you and your team and wish you the best of luck moving forward with sketch.
The interface design is amateur at best. I expected more from an app that supposedly caters to ‘professional’ designers.
I quite like the interface. They decided to stick with a lot of simple, native UI elements as well as Apple-recommended and styled toolbar icons. This makes the app immediately approachable and understandable for anyone used to working in Mac apps. On the surface things may look simple, but there is a lot of functionality and many details tucked away.
It should also be noted that Sketch won an Apple Design Award for their UI, so, take that as you will :)
the text panel still lacks support for opentype, alternates, glyphs, etc.
View › Show Fonts, click gear icon, choose Typography…
I'm aware of those options…unfortunately they still lack some advanced features when working with type. Illustrator, inDesign and even Photoshop have full featured settings for working with type…and they should, considering typography is at the forefront of good design.

I gladly paid the 50. I was using a cracked testing version. I have to say this behaviour of mine was because Sketch 2 had so many bugs and glitches I didn't want to spend extra 80 bucks, also, because I started to use on January and the Sketch 3 thingy was coming close to.
Oh, Sketch App 3, you're great! But having to pay $49.99 for upgrade is not so great. You're breaking hearts of your early adopters.
Well, when you compare it to the $150 upgrade price of Photoshop…
It just let me think about next paid update. They might change direction to monthly payment like Adobe.
For any of you redditors out there, come check out /r/sketchapp for news, tutorials, questions etc about Sketch!
I've been using photoshop for the last 16 years, and after watching that intro video, I think I'm going to make the switch. I'm not fan of cloud based design applications in the first place so I'm not really looking forward to switching to CC. This application seems like it does everything I need for the current way I design-that intro video sold me.
Great! I'm a big fan of Sketch. However, I have a couple of issues here. The link to what's new that they provide on their blog post doesn't work: http://bohemiancoding.com/whats-new
If symbols is the only new feature, is it really worth the limited-time-only $50 price tag, for those of us who already own Sketch? I'd really like to see the new feature list if anybody has a working link to it.
I'm happy to pay for an update but I need to know that it's worth the same price that I paid for Sketch 2, because $50 is a lot to pay for a single new feature.
Here's a nice overview - https://medium.com/p/4b92d8b25f3
Thanks!
Can anyone report on how it's performing on retina? Have they done a decent amount to address some of the performance issues and bugs found in Sketch 2 with regard to this?
Much faster than Sketch 2. Working my largest .sketch yet, it's been very smooth up to now.
I'll be thoroughly testing Sketch 3's trial before buying, as my purchase of Sketch 2 has left me with an application that had many, many bugs and crashes, which as of this week will go forever unaddressed.
Kind of a bummer that I just bought the previous version a couple weeks ago. Poor, poor timing on my part.
Oh well. It'll be $50 well spent.
Aye carumba! I should read entire blog posts from now on.
Thanks for saving me $50!
Paying again, definitely NO go for me.
Yeah, because $50 is such a great expense for a tool that's supposed to make your professional work life easier.
I'm quite happy with their decision to make it a paid update and I didn't even use Sketch 2 very much.
haha lol, didn't expect so much fuss about my post. Most of the peeps who use Sketch are just fanboys, I see Sketch as a hipster program. I liked it but IMO they changed not enough to update from 2 to 3. I have been using Sketch 2 quiet a while in the beginning, but it won't defeat Photoshop for me.
Feel free to use and buy it, guys are doing a great job. But I don't think a little update is worth another 50$. If they changed more I defo would have bought it.
It seems software developers cannot win.
When the Creative Cloud subscription service was unveiled, people complained that they just wanted to buy and own a license to a given version of an application; one released in yearly cycles with upgrade prices in the triple digits and with a handful of new features of the calibre found between Sketch 2 and 3.
So a small team disrupts the design industry with a nimble application, listening to customers and continuing to support it with improvements over the course of 2 years.
Then they release a major update with improvements of at least the calibre Photoshop CS6 to CC represented, and release it for a comparatively affordable price, and people still complain.
It's interesting to see designers commoditising the product of a small, hard-working team of software designers and developers. I'd have thought designers—of all people—would be on the same page about the value of our work.
Yep, paying the equivalent of a single month for the Creative Cloud subscription for a very significant update to an application which has received a steady stream of improvements over the past 2 years is simply awful.
Martijn: Don't be so flippant.
Other guys: Don't be so snarky.
Let's just think about this for a second: yes, it's a lot cheaper than CS, but it's still something a lot of us have already paid for. Why should people coming in later pay, ultimately, less than the rest of us for the same set of features? Seems completely irrational to me.
Paid update? Fine, no problem. Pay more than you originally paid for the original? Seems pretty cheeky to me.
Let's just think about this for a second: yes, it's a lot cheaper than CS, but it's still something a lot of us have already paid for.
Well to be pedantic you've already paid for Sketch 2, not Sketch 3. If none of the new features appeal to you then there's nothing forcing you to upgrade.
$50 to a professional for a tool that you regularly use isn't all that much really. A chef would buy a knife for that.
I paid more for drinks, last weekend. But then again, I just might have a drinking problem.
I meant I've already paid for the majority of the software, which is largely going to be the same thing. My point is that a discount for existing users, who've supported them earlier on, would be nice.
I can see I'm out-opined here, anyway, so there's not much we can achieve by arguing this out :) They've made their choice, I'm sure they have their reasons for charging this much across the board.
I'm gonna give the new feature list a read and maybe try the free trial, then I'll decide whether to buy the new version.
Anyway, I totally agree with you about the price. I think it's a reasonable, and quite fair price, for a professional software tool, I just don't know for sure yet if I fancy paying it twice for a few new features. In fact, I love the fact that they charge at all, but don't charge the absolutely insane prices that Adobe charge.
Why should people coming in later pay, ultimately, less than the rest of us for the same set of features?
What you say here perfectly describes a subscription software license, like CC too. Imagine Sketch as running on a subscription model as well. Sketch's bills just come every 1.5 years instead of every month.
Also, who here paid for a newer model iPhone/android when their 2-year contract is up? Buying the iPhone 1 doesn't entitle you to free phone updates forever...
Metaphors aside, devs gotta eat. I'm happy to pay, and see my payment as a small bit of insurance that Bohemian Coding will be around long enough to make Sketch 4. :)
This is one of those times a downvote would be nice. This is such a great company putting in boatloads of work on a david and goliath mission. I'd pay $50 just to support them continuing work and not even get anything in return. Don't think of just yourself, think of the real people working at this company that need to continue getting paid to continue working on this.
Also, as someone else pointed out, this entire app is equal to using photoshop/illustrator for one month. That is absurd.
So that's why it's worth a down vote? They are doing a great job indeed. But "But I don't think a little update is worth another 50$. If they changed more I defo would have bought it.".
They changed a huge amount. I just bought and downloaded it, and it is a massive update. There aren't a lot of shiny new features to flaunt, but almost everything about the interface has been fiddled with and improved, as well as a huge stream of stability increases and bugfixes. $50 for this is cheap in my view, after playing with it a bit.
EDIT: here's a video that goes over some of the changes. you'll quickly see how how of an update this was: http://www.sketchcasts.net/episodes/5
Agreed. Purchased, installed, reading through everything- this is a pretty big update.
I had the beta. The only thing that I love is the Teehan+Lax symbol thingy. But that's not worth the money. I hope you guys enjoy using Sketch!
I actually made a DN reader app for the Design+Code contest in the Sketch 3 Beta, feel free to use it and explore Sketch with it. https://layervault.com/rev/O8UDywXOn6
(The close icon feels pretty odd, but that's an Layervault preview issue I think.)
Hahah I love how this comment is at -1 points even though that doesn't seem possible for normal users. Good, it deserves it. "Not worth the money" is so absurd of a justification here.
Just to continue hitting this same point over and over, you must understand that bohemian coding employs real people to make this product, who need to be paid in order to continue working on it. Second, if you compare this with the only competitor, creative cloud, the price difference is so gigantic that it is truly absurd. Third, if you are a freelancer, it's pretty likely that one single hour of your work covers the price of this product. Never mind thinking about the hundreds and hundreds of hours of hard work that have gone into making this what it is.
I guess value is different for everyone though!
Admins can downvote.
woooo
$65AU in the Australian App Store? Really?
I know this is probably more an Apple thing than Bohemian Coding thing with the recent Apple price rises but with the current currency conversion it should be ~$53AU. Sure, round it up to $55 but $65?
Edit: Blaming Apple for this one, they've bumped the Aussie conversion to 130% of the US prices
There is so much to like in Sketch, but really wish it better vector manipulation. Something like Illustrator's Direct Selection tool would be ideal. It makes a big difference when resizing complex shapes to be able to drag out individual points of a rectangle for example.
Not sure I follow exactly what you're looking for, but Sketch has some pretty decent vector manipulation tools, including the ability to drag and position individual points: http://cl.ly/V0sd
That looks really interesting. How did you initially create the rectangle? When I use the Insert>Shape>Rectangle command, I can only resize it like one big box, rather than the individual points.
A bit more info on my original point: https://www.dropbox.com/s/64wo8auevfgo4ol/sketch-test.mov Illustrator allows you to select multiple points across different objects (even grouped objects), and reposition them all at the same time. Is this kind of interaction possible with Sketch?
There's no Direct selection tool as such, but you can manipulate the individual points of any shape by selecting it and hitting Enter or clicking on Edit!
Awesome! Great work guys.
Wondering though what happened to the neat little feature where I can click into a textinput field e.g Size, and drag my mouse left or right to move the value higher/lower?
ok, not just me. that was a feature before...
It's still there but on the field's label now.
14 day trial link ?
What I've seen and read so far: Great improvement!
Do artboard presets work for anybody? The list on the right is empty and I can't seem to add anything.
Seems to be broken. I've tried adding something with the plus button on the bottom right, but after dialing in the dimensions it neither creates an artboard, nor adds something to the list.
Yep, same here. I saw in one of the videos that there are supposed to be a few standard artboard sizes that aren't there either. Strange.
Bug. Fix coming soon on 3.0.1
My artboards are not working either so something is up.
Where?
hmz... not in the app store yet?
yeah it is, just not coming up in searches yet. Their direct link will get you too it though from their page. 49$ for a limited time new app on app store.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sketch-3/id852320343?mt=12
is direct link to 3.0
Thanks for that! =)
is anyone else getting $64.99 for the price on the app store? thought that was weird
How easy is Sketch to get the hang of for someone who's looking to just get started in design?
When you say "just getting started" do you have experience using things like Illustrator, Photoshop or other graphics tools?
I really like the update, but I'm still hesitating to make the switch in our studio to go full Sketch and ditch PS & AI.
Do you feel it is mature enough as a tool, and the industry is ready to accept other formats than vector or psds?
I would go all in, but I don't want alienate my clients nor collaborators...
Can someone enlighten me on this? It seems to be more of a tool for designing apps and icons, not responsive web. Since it would be unrealistic to have artboards as the breakpoints? (Desktop HD, desktop, tablet, phablet, mobile)
Not sure how you could make it work with Sketch (Google was not very helpful here). If you need a design program that is geared toward web designers and also has support for flexible canvases with breakpoints… look at Macaw: http://macaw.co/
I can see how Sketch 3 can help with designing responsive sites. Shared text/layer styles and symbols could allow you to string multiple art boards together for different viewports more easily than Sketch 2.
P.s. I think it also depends on how you personally do responsive design. For example, some people do mockups for all the breakpoints… some people do style guides or UI kits, and then go into the code. Also, do you do mobile-first design or desktop-down?
Between Sketch, Macaw, Photoshop, and designing in-browser, there’s room for all workflows :)
The front end designer in my team has been championing in browser design. Shame that Sketch can't be in our team's process because of that. Macaw is the closest, still waiting for some of the bugs to be ironed out.
We mostly do mobile first, but if desktop has the complicated layout, we work down from there.
Can someone explain me usage of Retina Canvas option. As it just changes zoom and nothing else is happening.
When will Sketch be available for windows?
never
As a student, I'll see what designers say about sketch 3, especially some famous designers i follow (i.e Meng To). What I really need is the smart object, which allow me to make perspective mockup. I hope sketch3 have it!
It has symbols, so yes.
Wel hello mousewheel scroll, I've missed you!
Is it true that it is only available in the American App Store?
Nope, at least it's available in Europe, however it's abut 25% more expensive here, as almost everything in MAS is.
Yeah I've found it now. I reckoned $50 would be about €35, but it turns out to cost €45 euros. Still a great deal, though...
What I'd love now is a 'Snow Leopard' kinda release where they'd focus on nailing performance and general bug fixing and forgo new features completely.
I've been waiting for 3.0 to come out so I could purchase it and get into the application finally. I was really excited to see it released this morning and happily paid the $50 (better than $80!) even though I am a current Creative Cloud subscriber and daily user. As you are all well aware, and I now know and understand, Sketch is a wonderful tool to add to our digital toolboxes as designers.
Pencil :D
Yay. Still dont like the bright bold-bold UI, but symbols are worth the $50.
yeah :)
