If anyone has any questions about this, I'm the one to ask - fire away!

Can you ever do too much onboarding? What Pinterest does is extremely intricate with lots of steps, illustrations, tips and other little details. It looks extremely well though-out, but looking through I'm wondering if there's a point of too much? Or is that not an issue since people can always skip these steps?

I'm also curious on how far these steps are replicated in their mobile apps.

Hi Christoph! I define "onboarding" as the process of making more people more successful with your product more quickly, so in that sense "too much" isn't really an applicable question.

If you're looking at interfaces specifically designed to introduce people to your product, though, I think it's entirely possible - think of all the times you've cranked through an intro tour by clicking "next > next > next > next" without even reading the screens. If it's tedious, it's not helping people become successful, and is distracting from the experience.

All that said, I'm sure Pinterest's audience is WAY less tech-savvy than, say, Designer News', so a level of hand-holding you or I would find tedious might be just right for their larger user base.

I personally think the mobile onboarding is even better. Why not download the app and give it a shot? :P

This is an awesome add...I was just looking for a few approaches to onboarding for a new client last week.

Hm, that's not good. Is the site loading, but just not the slides? Or the whole thing?

        Any page on the site.

I've tried some other pages posted here before, none of the loaded. I thought it's because the heavy load the site got being posted here.

Anyway, when I opened the Google's cache of the home page from which I got the link to the WhatsApp.com post, and then opening the cached one, all slide images --which are on S3-- loaded fine.

        Maybe your ELB conf?

Ok, I just asked a few friends. None of them can open the site too. (3 in Jakarta, 1 Bandung)

That's not good! I have no idea why it'd be slow- or non-loading for eastern Asia connections, but I'd love to get to the bottom of it. I can say that the web host had full uptime during all the times you described.
