While I applaud it's fluidity, I'm not sold on the overall design. The dark background, orange/wood colored container, and oversized icons make it feel clunky and outdated. In my opinion, with a little more polish the site would feel a whole lot more friendly, cleaner and finished. But again, I do love how fluid the layout is, how it adapts and adjusts; that's really great.
It's not just THIS design, I've never been a huge fan of ANY of the CSS Tricks designs. But that's just my preference.
Great tutorials though.
Agreed. I'm not a fan of the style. But it's readable, and this is one of those sites where the content is so awesome, that the aesthetics don't matter as much. It's not ugly, just not my style (and looks a little dated).
I had the same first reaction, and interestingly also when I first found Codepen. But I've since come to really admire Chris' style quite a bit. He is kind of a maverick and actually really shreds, but sometimes it takes a higher-altitude context to appreciate.
For example, I really like the almost-harsh color scheme, because it's totally unique, it has personality, and like, fuck it — it's CSS-Tricks and it rules. Furthermore, regarding the oversized/bubbly stuff: imagine you are drunk, or blind, or experiencing a heat-stroke... I promise this is going to guide you to the most relevant content infinitely faster than the sweetest burger glyph on dribbble, 100% of the time.
I don't know. I guess my point is that I think it's beautiful despite the fact that it may not be "beautiful".
Is it just me or the logo has a kerning problem?
It appears as "CSS Tri cks" for me
Mobile Safari 7.0.6
Thanks a lot, now I can't unsee it. My eyes!
I think it's because the hover-effect on desktop, which change css-tricks to css-trixxx.
a nice :hover easter egg on the site logo
I love how the shorter thoughts and links are offset from longer posts with a different background! Makes the page extra scannable, which is a huge win with this much content.
Notice the 4 step responsive treehouse ad on the top right corner. I love it. Awesome detail.
I love it, looks so friendly.
