How do you find good UX designers?

7 years ago from , Product Designer at Oscar

I've never been in a position where I actually had to actively search for creative talent. I've worked as a creative in advertising for years and now that I'm in the start-up world I'm having to find people and reach out in order to build a team. Where do people go to find good UX talent? I'm based in NYC if that helps.

Thanks in advance!

I avoid LinkedIn and recruiters at all cost. Unless you want to filter through hundreds of unqualified applicants. You know who you want in your head, so go find them yourself. Plus, why would you want them talking to a recruiter when they're going to be working with you? Seems a little impersonal, no?

I search for designers and create a list (Google Doc) of who I feel is is talented, fits with our culture, and also seems to be genuinely great people to work with. I then reach out to each one of them personally. Sometimes I'll even try and meet up for a beer/coffee.

I have far better quality of people in the pipeline and I get to establish a working relationship early on.

    Good luck!
