One of the best cover letters I've seen. Hope you get hired!
Other critical thoughts:
- The 'Why Me' section is great. I like the 1-10 idea. Maybe go with a lighter background though.
- I feel like the tags are too big in your Resume section. Also they look like buttons, but aren't buttons.
Thanks so much for your feedback Evan!
Yeah the coral background is a bit in your face, I will probably choose a lighter shade. I will definitely lessen the padding for the tags. The tags looking like buttons is a concern, I'm not sure how else to style them since as a list they looked quite overwhelming.
Thanks again!! :D
if Airbnb don't hire you, lotta kittens gonna die.
This is great Kathy, I love to see this kind of proactive initiatives, people fighting to get what they want, you go girl!
PS: CSS is all caps, not Css, your audience here are designers, we are terrible at this, I had to say it :p
Thanks Rafael! Wow...how did I not notice that....I think it just goes to show that no one should be coding at 6 in the morning
Excellent cover letter. If they don't hire you, it means they're broke!
As for the tags, I suggest a border-radius of half the height so they look more like tags and less like buttons.
Maybe something like that:
I'm not really sure you even need tags for this sort of thing. They don't really add that much that more refined copy in the description of your role would cover.
Failing that, they should probably just be a list anyway as I always think tags are to enable me to click and see related, similarly tagged entries and this doesn't do that.
Also in your intro text, you need to change "an UI/UX design intern" to "a UI/UX".
Really great to see this sort of approach and effort looking for a role you want to make happen :)
Thanks for your critique James! I think I will leave them as tag-looking things for now, although it is problematic for sure. I changed the intro text, thanks for pointing that out.
Thanks Pierre! That actually works a lot better than what I have now.
How about a picture that we/they can see your face. You're always looking away or down! If this doesn't get you an interview or at least a foot in the door I'm not sure what will. Good luck; great work! Especially for a student. You are way ahead of your peers.
But that's my best angle ;) Thank you for the nice words Ryan.
Best of luck, Kathy!
Thank you so much!
I really hope this works for you, how can any company turn down an intern with this much passion, creativity (love your custom font btw) and drive!
Really great stuff! Keep us posted.
P.S. Perhaps changing the shape of the "tags" to having one triangular end, like a tag?
Thank you for the kind words Thomas! I actually changed the tags to a rounder shape, thanks for the suggestion.
Would be a lot more convincing with a smiling face to associate with the cover letter!
How does one smile?
Awesome stuff, hope it works out!
Goog luck Kathy! Keep us posted how it goes! ;)
Thank you Artiom!
Great work Kathy. Nothing like going after what you want. Hope you get it!!
Thank you Bardan!
Lovely! Best of luck!
Couple of things (no biggies): - You're missing the lang attribute on the html element.
Empty h1. This is one of the most important elements, add text and then visually hide that text with CSS.
Headline structure is off. You're going directly from h2 to h5.
Insufficent contrast on text. This is a great tool: http://snook.ca/technical/colour_contrast/colour.html
There are some small validation errors. Easy to fix.
Thanks for letting me know Peter, your comment is really helpful.
This is awesome :)
Thank you Alec!
Great effort, hope you get the job !
I'd say that's worth an interview. Good job!
I hope so! Thanks Spencer.
Looks great! The nav bar is a little crowded on my iPhone when it scales down responsively. Perhaps consider a mobile show/nav with a button? Or play with the layout.
And good luck! I think you stand a good chance.
Thanks Hawke! The site looks pretty terrible on mobile right now, will definitely fix the nav today. Thanks for your suggestions :D
Great job Kathy. Expected from a fellow YSDN'er, hope you get the gig.
Yay a fellow YSDNer! Thanks Federico. I'm always blown away by what former YSDNers are up to.
I think it's beautiful, and I love your typeface! The one critique I have is, the page jumps slightly when the navigation becomes fixed. But seriously, great work — I hope you get that internship! :)
Thanks Jake! Yeah the navigation bar definitely needs some easing. I will try to fiddle with the code.
your portfolio is awesome btw!
Thanks for checking it out Murat!
Great cover site and a great portfolio to back it up! Hope you get the job.
Thanks Shane! That's the dream :')
Good luck! Remember to let everyone know if the website pays off – I'm sure it will
Thank you Carl! Will do :)
Great letter Kathy! I hope they'll hire you as an intern. I'd love to work there as well! Good luck!
EDIT: BTW, are you hoping they'll read your letter from here? Or...? And let us know if you got hired! =)
Thanks Martijn! I actually got in contact with a designer at Airbnb last week. It was difficult for me to wait for his reply to my email so over the weekend I made this site. ;)
Kathy this looks super sweet. I'm in a similar position to you at the moment, so I know exactly how bad you want this, and it really shows! It's a great idea, I hope you get the internship. Make sure to post when you hear something ;)
Thank you Sam! Are you applying for internships right now as well?
More like applying for my first full time jobs, but it's definitely about aiming high and not underselling yourself!
The only thing I was going to point out was that you didn't match the Airbnb font and then I realized you used a font that YOU DESIGNED!!! Well done, I'm sure you'll get a job there!
Thank you David!
Great to see more pd talent coming out of YSDN. Keep up the good work =)
Thanks so much Wayne. Go YSDN go!
Kathy rocks for sure :) Good luck!
Thank you Frank!
Go Kathy, Go!
