Show DN: Student Portfolio - Critiques wanted

over 5 years ago from , Designer @Behance/Adobe

Hello from a long-time lurker of DN. I would really appreciate it if you guys could critique my portfolio site: http://kythe.co It's my first portfolio site so don't be afraid to rip it apart, I really want to make it better. I'm currently applying for product design, UI/UX and visual design internships and want to make sure that it is suitable. Thanks!

It looks nice overall, couple of points.

    1. Your mailto link on the Let's collaborate has a target of _blank, in Chrome that is opening a new tab as well as a new mail message. It's also not good form to add a mail link without being explicit about what it's going to do.

    2. Only two of your social icons have a hover effect and I find it strange the Pinterest changes to blue given their colour is red.

    3. All the hover effects are a touch slow coming in for my liking but that could just be my preference.

    4. The classification colour is a bit hard to read (the light grey), you have to keep in mind us old folks.

    5. Again with legibility, the About page body typeface could stand to be a few points bigger. The individual work pages have a nice legible size.

    6. The site is written in first person, except the about page where you switch to third. Why?

Overall it's nice, I quite like the choice of typefaces and the understated feel to it. Nice work.

Thanks so much for your critique Rick! It's really helpful.

1 Maybe I could get rid of the _blank, and add a subtitle under?

2 & 3 I am using svgs for the social icons so when you hover over the negative spaces in the icons, nothing happens. I am thinking of switching to pngs.

4 Noted, will be changing to a darker grey

5 Noted, will be making it bigger

6 I was experimenting with tone and am still working on a new about me blurb. (Trying to make it sound more casual and inviting)

Yes definitely get rid of the _blank, it serves no purpose in this case. The subtitle would be good in my opinion, it's not necessary of course but a little indication that you're going to open my email is nice.

I see what you mean about the SVG, that's strange. Definitely go with the PNG I think, it makes more sense than flaky hovers.

Keep it up, it's very nice work Kathy!
