After months of it being the most-requested feature on the site, it's finally here: the Designer News API. It's an API that speaks JSON, is RESTish, and uses OAuth 2 for authentication. We designed it using the LayerVault API as a template. You can read the full documentation here.
Although some great products have been built using the "secret" Designer News APIs in the past, this is the first effort to standardize this interface. Unlike the creative efforts of the community in the past, the API also allows for write access. You'll notice from the docs that you can leave comments and vote on stories using the interface. This will allow the great apps like MobileDN to bake in even more functionality found on the site.
Because write access is now allowed, we are being selective about who will get access early on. Any apps found abusing the system will be immediately shut off. If you're interested in getting access to the API, please drop an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with a note of what you'd like to build.
The Designer News community never ceases to amaze us, and we can't wait to see what you come up with next.
