How would you reinvent emoticons for iOS?

over 8 years ago from

Implementing a chat system at work, and we are all in agreement that using emoticons in iOS is a bit tedious. How would you revamp emoticons?

Here are a couple of things that spring to mind:

    1. Let users draw an emoticon, and then recognising the features drawn (mouth shape, eye size, etc.) turn it into a rendered, prettier version of the thing they drew.

    2. Have the front-facing camera figure out what emotion they're conveying, and choose an emotion that matches.

For #1, what if its a more complex emoticon? Like a skype beer mug, etc?

I'd say if you can't draw it, it's too complex to be an emoticon - but that might be because I'm a grumpy old man who thinks colon and capital letters ought to be enough.

Although that seems fun and interactive, I wouldn't want to do that.

I find Emoji quite useless actually, colon and parentheses should be enough hahah. Why would i ever need an icon of poop?
