Ask DN: What's your purpose as a designer?

almost 6 years ago from , Creative Director @ BoomTown

Designers tend to have a grandiose plan for what they want to impact in their life or industry. What is your design purpose and what do you hope to influence, change & create?

I want to create things people can't imagine living without.

It doesn't have to be anything big or complicated, it can be a tiny thing that makes a big difference. Probably why I'm obsessed with making the perfect bus arrival prediction app?

But it could be something enormously complex that makes the simple even simpler. Take Siri - I use it to set a timer when I'm doing laundry and that's about it. Complex system shaves 3 seconds of my least favorite chore and I can't imagine living without that!

For a while I had the purpose of create things which can impact the world and impress other designers. Be accepted by them. but for now I only want change my context, I mean, if I can make the local coffee shop sells more than a Starbucks, or if I can make a pretty and readable book for a kid, or the bussiness cards for my father. I'll be happy.

Today I focus in the little big details which can make a difference in my context.

Make the everyday for as many people as possible better, by solving problems with design.

You and @spencer H have similar thoughts... It's amazing how big of an impact small things like that can have on people and society at large... Nice answer.

When I was starting as a designer I was doing it, because I enjoyed creating things. I'll admit that at one point of my career, the payment was what motivated me the most. I had no real purpose, I was just working for clients to make money.

Now, after six years, things have changed, and my only purpose is creating an impact. I've discovered that working on products is way more meaningful than working on pointless client projects. I want to create amazing products, that improve people's lives and inspire other designers to do it also.

Seeing as I'm still in my 'learning' phase, I'm just trying to give back to this wonderful community which has helped me immensely. I wouldn't be able to design/make websites without the free help I've recieved, so I'm trying to give back and help others

i'm an in-house designer at a larger company, so my purpose is to combine various teams' political goals into a design that hopefully isn't a pile of crap.
