Ask DN : What is your daily rate ?

almost 4 years ago from , Designer at Maestrooo

Hey DN community,

I think it's always interesting to see how designers charge their clients and which type of clients do they work with.

Feel free to share your daily rate (if you've got one) and the type of clients you worked with (early stage startups, funded startups, big companies, Fortune 500) and the country where you live of course ;)

My turn : We price from 680 € / day (from 85 € / hour) for design work, with a minimum engagement of 10 days. We worked with funded startups and big companies in majority. We are located in France.

I don't have any hourly rate because I think it's stupid and not accurate. When I'm working on a project, I'm working on it 24h/day (shower, lunch, before going to sleep etc.).

Usually I do one of these:

    • Early stage startups: No cash, only equity.
    • Funded startups: 30k+/month

I'm very picky when it comes to project quality and I do a lot of research before I accept. I don't do any quickies (3 months minimum).

I worked at £350/day for the last year. For my latest contract, I felt I was bringing more to the table than just design and dev (ie strategy), so increased it to £500/day. Client didn't bat an eyelid. I think it's wise to go in high — you can always come down. Also with a higher day rate you can afford to only work 3 days a week, and use the other two to build your own stuff or learn new technologies (and thus increase your value).

Usually 75€ per hour, sometimes with additional equity when the company is in early stages and interested in working together with me for a longer period.

Minimum budget 3k€. Located in Germany, freelancing full-time.

For hourly/day based projects, I'm at $100 hr / $800 day for design and development services.

I've worked with solo entrepreneurs, startups, agencies, and even big corps (McKinsey, Edelman, Churchill Downs). Usually working on some sort of website design/development (using WordPress) or interactive presentations.

    In Chicago in the US.

We have a variable rate card. Established companies pay £70/hr and start-ups & small businesses pay £60/hr. Equates to £480-£560 a day. Min project size probably around the £6-7k mark. ~ 3 person ux/ui design agency in London. We consider ourselves good value in London for what we offer...

When I was freelancing it was most recently £350/day; if I went back to freelancing now I'd probably raise it a little.

This goes along well with the time tracking question posted today. My agency internally* bills about $1500/day between two employees @ $100/hr. We work primarily with influencing bloggers in Austin, Texas.

    • Internally meaning we use it as a reference guide for proposal accuracy but don't necessarily bill the client an hourly rate.
