Moan groan moan, boo-hoo-hoo..
This is gorgeous. Its wonderful and creative, and interactive - with carefully selected data about each country, clever little illustrations and animations.
Yes, the scroll-hijack is being overused but it's still a clever approach to what has previously been very static web design and once the trend settles it can only improve.
So here's to people's creativity, and if you have a good reason to hijack my scroll, then hey I say go for it!
The major problem with the hi-jacked scrolling on this website is that the scrolling is inconsistent. I spend X amount of time 'scrolling down' to load items in and then BOOM, they're just loaded in and already started to fade out, move away, or disappear before I even had a chance to look at it. The pacing isn't very good IMO.
This is my main gripe with this. I think it's a pretty nice idea and pretty trendy around here to hate on around here but it's done with the best of intentions.
Couldn't agree more! I'm sure we all can agree that scroll-hijacking is a little abused these days and defiantly not original anymore, but it works fine to a page showcasing 2013 stats.
This is really well designed, but man, my fingers get tired after so much scrolling.
4.5 billion hours, 1 billion playlists, 24 million users, 24,000 songs added daily... and still no good way to organize music.
Really cool micro site though with amazing attention to detail.
... and sadly they are going after their 6th round of funding :/
These scroll hijacking pages are going to look so dated that it doesn't even need to say "2013" at the start.
(I hope so, at least.)
This shit wouldn't fly at Rdio…
I'm on latest version of firefox and it seems to think I'm on mobile. No idea.
I hate sites that do this so much. Argh. Worst trend ever
Really bad executed. Don't they know about using translationXYZ for using the GPU on parallax?
Anyone have any good recommendations to an blog, article, etc that breaks down this kind of design? (I'm talking about implementing this correctly.)
Well kinda disappointed with the execution, doesn't work in Safari and is a bit laggy for me. Also this longform styling got a bit boring.
I'm on a small-ish touch screen laptop and it thinks I'm on a mobile device...
Anyone else having trouble logging in to see their personal charts?
Same here...
I've got a Macbook retina and the site is still a little laggy ... I can't imagine on older computers. Still a very creative approach to a year in review.
As a side note: in 2012 Spotify announced the "upcoming" feature "Collections". I waited all year and it sill hasn't come. Here's to 2014.
They're actually starting to roll out the collections feature to a subset of beta users right now.
I just saw that like 2 days ago. I signed up. Hopefully I get chosen but not likely. Hopefully their beta isn't a year long too.
You can get a little peek at collections by typing "spotify:app:collection" into the search bar. Doesn't really show a lot, but might change as they develop the feature.
Nice scrolly page, but man...thats alot of scrolling. Some cool photo backgrounds would have been nice.
IMO feels dated already. This type of effect was interesting about two years ago.
