the level of cringe in trying to become a design celebrity via 'funny' videos rather than through good work
You sound like a lovely person, Alexandra.
We can both do that, Seth.
The number of self promotional, low content posts haha. My advice would be to spend less time creating the videos and more time improving your design skills.
Sorry you don't like my content. I guess it's not just for you.
And as far as design work goes, I've got the rest of 2020 booked me and 4 other designers.
Have a good one Alexandra ;)
Oh good, so you won't have any free time to make these wack videos
You're only other fans on Twitter are other Christians maybe you should put your content on Pureflix and not here lol
lmaoooo wait there's a Godtube.com you can put YOU'RE trash videos there
Agreed (the seemingly random tagging of various other popular designers backs up your point).
The infantilization and memeification of Design is the reason we see so many articles about "why designers deserve a seat at the planning table" and posts pleading for more designer power in the workplace.
Different strokes for different folks, though. Hate to be a hater, but I do feel these types of posts are a net negative for the field. My penitence for having watched this will be reading three Eli Schiff critiques, two Dmitry Fadeyev articles and a chapter of Design is a Job.
The reason why I make these videos is because the design community as a whole takes itself way too seriously. It reeks of pride and elitism.
Also, the "random tagging" of popular designs was because I'm emulating their review styles when they've reviewed other rebrands.
Just let people enjoy things. If it's not for you, it's not for you ¯_(ツ)_/¯
A resounding "fair enough" to you.
After a decade and a half in the industry, I certainly see the design community in the opposite light, though: I find that people don't take it nearly seriously enough given the implications of a lot of what we do, which is why we're seeing people like Mike Monteiro struggling to get people to treat it as something more dire.
You do you, though. Haters gonna hate on the internet regardless.
Mike Monteiro can write quite well, but he is almost insufferable to listen to. And tbh his work has an off the shelf look to it. I think the best skill Monteiro has is self promotion — the thing you’re chastising Seth for. The only difference is Mike over-dramatizes design via fear and bluster to connect w audiences, and Seth has some fun at our expense.
To each their own.
The reason why I make these videos is because the design community as a whole takes itself way too seriously.
lol no it's not, it's to try and get followers so you can get more work
i know i'm not being nice but i can't stand the self promotion or the style
also upvoted soooo
You're completely right, and design "influencers" are fucking vile.
I also agree with what Jordan said. Design isn't taken seriously enough, especially by businesses and employers. And why should they, when dorks like Seth and Dan Petty put their stupid faces on camera and deliver DOA comedy videos, devaluing design community, criticism, etc.
I entirely agree.
go the fuck away Seth
Why do they call it "Design Twitter" when it's comprised entirely of people who do talks for a living rather than design.
It made me laugh bro :)
