Ask DN: Why does Google Web Fonts look better than @font-face?

over 5 years ago from , UX Designer/Developer

I suppose I should preface this by saying I am on a Windows machine. Even with gdi++, text rendering isn't as beautiful as a Mac's (I'm also on Windows 8.1. Ugh). Anyhoo, I am in the process of redesigning my portfolio and am using Source Sans Pro for the body text.

I am very irritated with the jagged edges that I have been getting with @font-face and I've even been using "text-rendering: optimizeLegibility".

For some reason, I decided to check out Google's Web Fonts and the same font looks perfect. Wtf? I want to know what Google is doing to make their fonts pretty. Is it JavaScript? CSS? Custom font-hinting?

I prefer to full control over my site assets, but I'll use Google's service if I have to.
