I suggest coming at this with the perspective of "learning how to design" rather than "tricks to use so you don't need a designer." It's far more helpful and valuable in the long run to learn a little design skill and see the process as design, instead of diminishing the design as a practice and trying to sidestep it.
Is refactoring the correct verb for this process? I actually expected a process that consolidates patterns and removes excess ones.
