Hmm, I understand that sites like Shopify, Squarespace, and Tictail make things easier, but I am not completely comfortable with that. I'd much prefer self-hosting, but these are great last resorts.
EDIT: Actually, Shopify looks pretty good, I'll look into it more.
Cool - yeah it's definitely worth checking out. And the templates are easy to modify too. Like i said - if you sign up with that link - I might be able to extend your 14 day free trial period a little bit? Also give me a shout if you need anything via twitter: @chrisedmo
Since I wrote that comment, I stumbled upon Forward (http://getfwd.com). I like how flexible the theming options are and I only have one product to sell. I will be trying their platform first.

Hey good question! I have used magento before, and personally I found i ended up spending more time tweaking and configuring my site to work faster, and perform better with SEO than i spent running my business!
Also I have some concerns over Magento after the eBay acquisition. Lots of core members of the team have left. The community version hash;t been updated as regularly… and they've stopped MagentoGo.
I now use and recommend Shopify to people. It's a SAAS platform, but the plus side means that all the tech and speed etc are all looked after by someone else - so you can concentrate on running your business! Plus the blog section on it is great. And it's really quick and easy to use too.
If you sign up for a free trial with this link I might be able to extend your free trial for you too.
Also they have great documentation to boot. It's literally the opposite of Magento! haha. I do however understand that it's not a self hosted - but seriously try it. It's great.
