It's modeled on actions that are common. This same sort of pan is used in Tweetbot, Twitter, etc., so it was something I thought users would be comfortable with.
I completely understand how you could feel that it's overloaded. It is used for 3 different actions in different directions. It can definitely feel like a lot of swiping after a while, although it does afford less constant tapping and sometimes cuts out a step. I had to make a compromise there.
