Agreed, also I saw no reason for a redesign. I used this quite a lot just a few months ago and at no point did I wish for a redesign (Thats saying a lot from a serial design complainer)
That being said, what I did wish for was more javascript classes but they havn't added any for a while. I wish they would have taken the time spent on this and added content, added value.
I disagree with you two. I think this redesign adds a much-needed new face to the site. The old design honestly seemed extremely dated to me. I know, it was along similar flat lines (to less of an extreme), but I think it just didn't work as well as it could have. They've rectified that with this design--it has a lot of personality (it takes work to do that with minimalism at this extreme), and I think it will take them a lot further than where their old design would have.
Me too, I feel like their JS courses are lagging a lot.
I can't recall the previous site, but if it didn't have that interactive hero, I have to think it regained any personality it lost in the interaction and copywriting.
I can see that little demo making people more excited to try a free class out than any visuals possibly could.
