From my experience: better brand = better recognition.

Now, better brand is not 100% subjective, but more on how that brand fits on the real world and that means you can mathematically measure the success, the better designed is, the more effective the brand will become. The classic logo has a lot of shapes, colors and symbolism. To me, this is a complex brand.

The current one is simpler for the brain to process. Also, as I stated, the brand application has to be thought well: the brand in 1 color, etc. The classic logo also has distinction of a bag, that can be a problem: if you want to pivot, then you have an element on the brand that will complicate your main idea.

This, of course, needs a more deeply analysis. I am just speaking based on my experience and I don't have real data to support my claims.
