It could be worth looking at video game UI patterns for this. Difficulty rating is something that games frequently use and could be a pattern people could be accustomed to.
Thats a great suggestion! I've looked at a few, and they all seem very tailored to the specific game. Super Smash Bros. has some interesting ways of solving this.
