Our first iterations of the "MENU" button started with the criteria that it had to work well with a mobile experience of our website. This gave us the parameters that it had to have a bounding of a square or a circle. We felt that the pattern itself of an overflow menu on websites is so new that the standard of the hamburger menu should be explored and pushed, so in the end we designed 100 menu buttons and the office liked this one the best.
Very interesting, thanks!

Beside the fact that this site looks totally kickass and awesome. Why did you decide to break the word ME-NU? It only occurred to be a couple pages in that this was not a logo but an actual menu button.
