Maybe try it out on a (shared) dropbox folder?

Will it work with dropbox? I don't so much care about visual diffing, but i've been talking with my team for a couple months now about building something that lets us each leave a commit message with our saves so we know what's been updated

Ahhh, you answered as I was typing my response. That answers my question in my comment. ;)

Theoretically, could this be connected to an existing Bitbucket/Github account?

We talked about this in the office. It seems Folio is purely a viewer for a Git Repo. So yeah it is basically git so you should be able to navigate to the directory, and add a git remote.

We're tempted to use Folio and set up a remote for occasional project backups to Beanstalk.

It's only a viewer now, but if you want you can add a remote and push from the command line (or any other client)
