Discussion: Is The Grid (www.thegrid.io) vaporware?

    The cool thing about design is that—no matter whether you're Müller-Brockmann or Gerstner or Carson or Brody or Barnbrook—it's rules-based. You have formalised rules like "lines should be ~66 character long", and then unconscious rules. The result of you months-years-decades of practise as a designer (we call that "experience") are just a set of rules for solving particular problems.

    This doesn't mean stale, trite designs; rather an exciting territory of things to scratch away at and turn into formalised statements. You can do the wildest designs that are still, at the end of the day, rules-based (see anything OKFocus did, or http://allanyu.nyc).

    Design can be messy, but good messy design is still messy-with-thought-and-principles.
