Slack vs HipChat : So yeah, we tried Slack too(slackvshipchat.com)

    I honestly believe that the major reason behind its success are designers.

    I can't back this up but I think designers were fed up with name of the service they used before UIs. They wanted something clean, efficient. They were used to see super clean designs on dribbble and suddenly Slack came up. So they convinced their CEOs or whoever was in charge of this kind of think and told them Slack was better. Back then it was almost the same (eg reliability) but with just a bit different UI (and more expensive than HipChat). Then boom ... free tier.

    It was like this at Tapmates and we share this scenario with couple more agencies I know.

      Introducing Slack in the workplace was an easy "win" for designers and should help further the place of design with metrics in mind in the company structure.

      On the flip side almost every org I know whose flipped to Slack has done so coz of a push from developers — because of the stupidly simple way you can code up your own integrations, more IRCish model than hipchat, etc. ;-)
