Why is the "hero" image called like this?

I'm more familiar with the term "Sub." (because it kind of looks like a submarine?) Depends on the area of the US you're from.

  sub, wedge, hoagie, hero, grinder, baguette.
  Sub seems to be the most common around the US in my experience.
