There's a teeny tiny issue with the alpha channel on that top image.

    Great stuff :)

Thanks Ian, I was aware of the jaggy alpha channel at the top edge of the PNG… I had to make a choice between sacrificing the smoothness of a 24 bit PNG for the benefit of saving 1Mb+ in file size and loading times for the user

First, feedback on the PNG: You could definitely get that PNG-24 down way below 1MB — I copied your image, posterized the photo down to 19 levels, saved as PNG-24, then used imageOptim to compress. Got to 139 KB — smaller than your current PNG-8. A couple notes:

        1. Posterization is the key to pushing your PNG-24 compression. Flat areas of color compress well to code.
        2. ImageOptim or a similar PNG Crush tool is your best friend (especially with posterization).
        3. Sometimes, PNG-8 with a little white border is a better option. Arguably it might be for your use here, with posterization + compression.

That said, I think your site is excellent Bobby! Lots of fun. I take an extra interest in it because I have been working here and there on a very similar "text disappearing behind mountains" look for a landing page that I hope to put up this weekend. I laughed when I saw your site — "well, darn!"

        Excellent work! Bookmarking your site.

Thanks for the kind words Kyle and also thanks for bringing ImageOptim to my attention, I'll definitely take a look and see if I can get a better quality version of that PNG without the jaggies down to a reasonable file size with that.

          Cheers!
