Yahoo A/B testing a new design

It's difficult to read the main column with all of the surrounding distractions. The purple navigation is too strong and the image thumbnails and large photos are pulling my eye to the right. I'm being made to look everywhere except for the main content. No bueno.

I definitely agree, but the large photos on the right pulling your eye are probably intentional because that's where they'll put the med rec. I'm not saying it's a good idea but it does the solve the right hand column blindness that users have on news sites.

I'm sure it is intentional but it makes for an uncomfortable reading experience. Putting the thumbnails on the left would create a bit more balance, the design is too heavy on the right side.

It's interesting to see how little emphasis they are giving to search, the input box is all alone and fairly low-contrast. The Yahoo logo is grouped with mail and categories of content to explore showing that Yahoo isn't trying to be a search engine anymore.

I think you're losing the forest for the trees. The new design is clearly better than the old one. It's not going to make Yahoo into the most popular site on the Internet, but what is?
