I agree, I think they are more like digital business cards. Which isn't a bad thing at all. It's very important to be visible on the web and to make sure you are the voice behind your name, but minimal sites are a bit more in depth.
I am a big fan of Kirby CMS. It's a flat file system so setup is a breeze and it can be very good for simple one pagers.
You may also want to take a look at a static site generator like Jekyll which allows for you to deploy easily when you need changes. Although that isn't really a CMS solution.
to be completely honest it may not be in your opinion. It is just another designer newsletter curated by a different studio with a different perspective. It will be a quick roundup of articles which we believe are important/interesting some fun content and possibly a bit about current work.
I am going to say your issues were with how you set it up. They work perfectly together and you don't need gulp since it's just a task management tool.
You should have waited, purchased the domain then sold it to them.
