Agreed. I'm kind of curious why he didn't allow/enable comments on his post. That seems like the lowest friction way of getting questions, and it would double as a ranking system if he used a commenting system with voting (e.g. Disqus).
As far as I can tell from exploring the website and app, no, it looks mostly a visual redesign.

The first one is the new design.
While I can understand your apprehension ("Will I need to pay for every update?", "How often will there be a paid update?", etc.), $49 is affordable, all things considered. Also, if $49 per big update will keep Sketch independent (specifically from Adobe), I am happy to pay the $49/update.
I compiled a list of the new features in Sketch 3 on Quora along with related links, using Bohemian Coding's page and Jean-Marc Denis' Medium post; I'll be continuing to update my answer as I find more new features and related links.
As cars become more driverless, the importance of in-car UI (and, more importantly, UX) will only increase. Tesla (and others) would be smart to invest heavily in UX/UI.
