I think it's awesome your self-taught! Keep on learning and improving your skills. Maybe your next step in learning is the terminal. It's scary at first but the more you use it the better you'll get. If you've self-taught yourself HTML/SCSS/CSS/JQUERY I truly believe you can learn anything you set your mind to.

I choose music that keeps me focused. It has to be at least an hour in length to keep me in the groove and not have distracting lyrics. Try out space ambient it's very calming and focuses you.

Have to agree with you on this. If the font was used elsewhere in the design maybe it could work.

Maybe you could convince them to hire part-time temps from your local art school. They get the job experience and you get a better creative environment.
