  • Posted to PHPetite: A single file blog, Feb 10, 2021

    Hello everyone!

I recently “launched” PHPetite - a static blog/site generator that generates into a single HTML file.

This was really just an open source project to scratch my own itch of seeing what was possible with “one file” websites.

    Features at a glance:

    • Entire blog is rendered in a single HTML file
    • Inline, compressed CSS
    • All images converted into base64 encoding
    • Minimal requirements / no heavy build tools

Let me know your thoughts and/or share any issues you might come across in the repo!

Overall, it lets me know right away the who, what and why - which is refreshing not having to jump around figuring that out.

Some initial points (based on only a couple minutes with the website):

    1. The typeface. Since the content revolves around such a serious topic as divorce, I think the type should be set in a more professional style type. Right now it looks a little too lighthearted or "fun"

    2. On mobile it isn't the best UX to have both a fixed positioned header AND CTA at the bottom. That ends up eating roughly 100px of my screen real estate.

    3. There seems to be a minor issue with the initial load of CSS in a user's first visit (pops in the styling while loading). Might want to look into critical CSS or how your pipeline is structured.

Other than that the site does its job telling me immediately what service it provides. Some of the copy could be further improved but that's not really the focus of this comment. :)

I love seeing new concepts evolve in the blogging space. Another good alternative you might be interested in is https://blot.im/ (uses Dropbox as a blog)

If having illustrations for your startup is critical to your marketing / branding, then you should be hiring custom illustrations from illustrators. Grab your own unique style instead of being a carbon copy of every other tech start-up. It is worth the money (if this is truly important to you).

I'm all for the concept of companies / people sharing ideas and giving back to the community, but I feel like our industry is making illustrations feel like second-class citizens. "Why bother hiring a talented illustrator when you can just throw together your own!"

Just my 2 cents. If this works well for you - more power to you.

I've always loved this concept, but have you checked out https://opensourcedesign.net ? Not sure if it 100% fits what you're thinking.

I'm using it on my personal site: bradleytaunt.com (although that's not really a "project").

I haven't used it extensively in any large UI system yet, but I think it's pretty clean :)

Just a small side-project I put together for fun. Wanted to make it easier for designers to find a list of remote design opportunities in one spot (and directly to their email as well)

Only 2 issues in so far - but looking forward to seeing it grow!

They have lost all original personality that their original brand / site had. Really disappointing that everyone seems to be following this child-like illustration style as well.
