These examples don't seem so egregious to me. Most of their photos don't even have any of their products in it. If brands are trying to raise their profile by contributing good quality photos to Unsplash then that seems fine to me.
Sometimes I'll use a new project to use a different visual diary.

Can I ask why they wouldn't?
In my opinion the utility of these are questionable even on Facebook, let alone on a blog post which can often be a longer and more detailed collection of thoughts.
I get that it is meant to be a kind of quick reaction type of thing however I can't help but be a little offended by the thought that my feelings can be reduced to six glyphs. Words already work, and if you want imagery then we already have a range of rich glyphs.
I like your A/B Test idea. I think it's also quite possible the bots could pass the Turing Test if you did.
