Great feedback! Actually, what you described is almost exactly what we did. First, we worked out a site map, goals, and elements that would help us to achieve them. Then, we started off with a homepage prototype: decided which elements will be displayed there in order of importance.

On paper and on a strategic/theoretical level we are in sync, but when it comes to actual design, our lines of thought cross. He's just not used to a modern/cleaner 'feel and look' that today's sites are characterized by—and shows me examples of old sites from the 90s (I'm not exaggerating).

Another problem is that our industry is lag behind in terms of design, so the authoritative sites of competitors/partners reinforce his beliefs that I'm wrong.
