Designers using 4k displays: What resolution are you running?

3 years ago from , mike.cm

I picked up a 4k display for my 2015 MacBook Pro recently, and it looks great, except apps like Sketch are almost unusable at scaled 1440p. So. Much. Lag. I'm assuming this is because of the GPU stress of the non-native scaling. If I set it to native 3,840x2,160 resolution it works pretty good, but the UI is WAY too tiny. And I don't want to run it at smaller 1/2 res, UI too big. 1440 is that sweet spot.

Anyone running at full res and have any tips to scale UI elements so my eyes don't explode? Or, if I buy a brand new MBP, do the newer GPU's handle scaling better? I have an AMD Radeon R9 M370X 2 GB GPU.

Get anything figured out on this? My 2015 runs my 24 inch 4k Dell display fine at home, my 2018 runs a 27in 4k LG display at work just fine. I'm using 2650 at the moment. Was also wondering what other designers used. In display preferences, if you hold the option key while clicking the 'scaled' radio button it'll show more options.

I bought a 2017 MBP and it works fine. A lot of the lag was with Sketch which they’ve fixed in latest versions.
