Refining logos of Wikimedia Projects — a Brand Exercise (medium.com)

A very interesting project, however I wish all logos would be shown with colors and including the tag lines. I currently have the feeling they went a little overboard with simplifying so that the logos feel fairly generic and hard to recognise.
Globally, it seems a bit inconsistent.
Initially I wasn't digging the results. But when you see the tags / label treatment with the different colours at the end they really come together. That being said, I think Dictionary and Thesaurus being a search glass is too abstract and loses a lot of the historical and cultural context the current phonetic tiles offer. I'm also not sure why iceberg is so abstracted in to concentric circles but the horse head is so literal.
Really cool study though. A great read.
Great point, I was thinking the exact same thing going through every new identity. While the designer focused on simplifying the brand, it feels like there is a lack of consistency regarding the aesthetic he was going for (minimalist, detailed) and the heritage he was supposed to keep from the former logo.
Looking for example at Wikinews then Wikiversity, it looks like they come from two completely different icon sets.
That being said, it's a nice projet, and definitely a good read
