What are your thoughts on using Craft CMS to build portfolio website?

over 5 years ago from , Freelancer

I want to build a custom portfolio website, one that I can easily add new portfolio items or side-projects in a template that I develop and design by myself at the start. I have a little bit of experience with Shopify's Liquid templating language and I realised that Craft's Twig Primer is very similar. Is it the best option, or are there better CMS for my situation? I mainly just need customisation and ability to create templates for my portfolio site (and a blog.)

I've used Craft for a couple of years now and for me it's the best CMS I've used. If you proficient in twig then it's a no-brainer.

I'm working on my new site (finally) and it's so good to be able to have complete control over my layouts. Craft has a thing called Matrix Block which are repeatable blocks essentially. Which are great for making 'content builders', or alternating layouts for your 'portfolio' pages.

Have a look here for how to set it up and use it… https://nystudio107.com/blog/creating-a-content-builder-in-craft-cms

Download it have a play. You wont look back! And join the slack channel - the Craft community are great!

Is there any online tutorials for Twig? I just learned Shopify's Liquid and Twig is so similar, but I'm not sure if the 2 are interchangeable.

It's probably overkill but go for it. Use it as a learning experience. I did the same thing a few years ago and when Craft 3 is released I think I'm going to redesign my site and use it as a learn gin experience for some of the new image editing tools.

WordPress has been used for our website http://customwritingcompany.com/essay-helper/ and we are pretty satisfied with it. Still now we are considering switching to Twing.
