    What an amazing and insightful read.

    Having spent 26 days, a couple of years ago, creating individual glyphs (in a variety of styles) for a personal project, I have so much respect for anyone tackling type design.

    It’s hard and there are so many nuances that really confuse and go against any preconceptions of form.

    “Trust your eye above the maths” a mantra for everyone to follow!

      Thank you! 26 days for 26 letters is a pretty good start. I'm sure if you looked at it now you'd find many ways to improve on that too. Giving the design a bit of breathing room, looking at other things and then coming back to it always shows you a different perspective on your own work.

      You think? I'm certainly not claiming to be an expert, and the article should make abundantly clear that I'm a first timer, and I'm referencing the work a lot of people who are themselves regarded as experts. It's only an overview based on my personal experience not "the definitive guide to type design" – I just thought it was worth sharing what I learnt.

          it literally says it's their thoughts.

          Instead of making a hot take it would have been nice to approach it as "hey i got through this the first time and here are my thoughts on what I did to get here and how I can do it better in the future, an how someone with no experience can start" vs " I'm the master of all things type hear me roar" which isn't at ALL something i got from the title or the article it self which actually has references to other places with advice and help.

          Its not subjective, it's clear he's a beginner by stating, and I quote, "After releasing my first typeface..." (emphasis mine). The rest, "...I wrote my thoughts..." hints at describing some of the issues another beginner might run across should they go down the same path. How you got from this title that this would be some sort of doctoral dissertation on type design is quite the mystery.

    I felt really curious about this topic for a while. Mainly about which software was suitable and affordable to tackle this. I've read many articles that touch on many aspects on how to make typefaces, but nothing that covers so much as this in such straightforward way. Thanks!
