Then why do it with text and not graphical elements :) ? Messing with the brain trying to take hierarchy; you want to read text, whilst a graphical element can ALSO make the site look cool and different to others but not stop your digesting the site by trying to read.

Httpster is neat, it's easy to see new sites and if they're looking inspirational or not.

I agree Awwwards is a great example of too much UX/UI. A little over-designed in my opinion. Sometimes it is good to take your foot off the gas.
Dominic Whittle, over 6 years ago I tried to keep it pretty simple. Httpster is all about the content on the site, not trying to look too cool in its own right.
Well executed in that regard.
