I've been working on this for some time, but never had the time to formally read on the subject. I was wondering which books gave you the best insights on the whole process of branding.
Highly recommend The Brand Gap. Really concise overview and raises some interesting concepts.
I'm also surprised not to see Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind. It's due for an update but the concepts still apply.
interesting... will definitely check it out
Agreed! 'Zag another brand book by Marty Neumeier is quite good also.
Another good one is Johnny Can't Brand
This is a great book on the subject. https://www.amazon.com/Designing-Brand-Identity-Essential-Branding/dp/1118099206
To me this was the most "Instructional" book on branding I've read. You could literally follow the steps in the book, and it is very exhaustive. Perhaps it is more relevant for folks doing corporate or CPG branding work where the scale of $ and time investment is a lot larger than in say, your average startup or small business. Anyhow, it does describe a quite detailed process,
Would also recommend this book! It was the first book i read about branding and it gave me a solid base, although as Alexander said, it's a very long process that it describes and it might not make sense for all the projects you will be working with.
Aaron Draplin's book is an enjoyable read covering his career and the mind blowing amount of work he's put out
I enjoyed Brand New by Wally Olins, one of the forefathers of corporate identity. It has nothing about process or methodology, but as a high level overview of branding as a concept and how it has evolved, I found it helpful.
Also, shoutout to the person who recommended Uncorporate Identity by Metahaven on this thread.
Designing Brand Identity
Not necessarily formal reading, but I couldn't recommend this book enough.
Not that I've read many, but Brand Thinking and Other Noble Pursuits by Debbie Millman is a book I felt left me wiser.
Definitely Logo Modernism
I highly recommend Branded Interactions: Creating the Digital Experience. It's one of my favourite books and a good mix between branding and design :)
Marks of Excellence by Per Mollerup – good history and theory for identities
For logos inspiration, the Los Logos series is excellent.
I can see some good books recommended already.
I enjoyed reading books by Bernadette Jiwa: Difference; Meaningful; also her blog has been very useful
I love Alina Wheeler's Designing Brand Identity http://designingbrandidentity.info/
Logo Design Love by David Airey! It's more focused on the visual side of branding, but shaped the way I approached identity design.
Not a book, but pretty much anything Mark Kingsley writes is of interest to me.
