well this is very sad news. especially thinking of what it means for the mini and the mac pros futures...

What options do have we have now, im sure the apple+lg display is of good quality but the design of that thing is horrible. The cinema display has set the standard, i know it sounds awful but i cant imagine a top performing design studio (where i'm at or any) filled with those lg monitors.

    what other options are there?

Yeah, those LG displays are great spec wise, but I’m not putting one of those on my desk. Nope. No thanks.

Exactly my thoughts too. I'm getting iMac 5K and going to use 12" MB or 13" MBP when I can't be by my desk.

Agree. Also they're losing the optics of walking into an office and seeing a sea of Apple displays, something that I think really cements Apple's place in ppls minds.

I have a really hard time seeing the upside of getting out of the display business for them, unless displays were secretly bleeding them dry, which seems very unlikely, or they have some magical post-display future up their sleeve.

Here's another framing of the problem: what display will Jony Ive have on his desk in 5 years?

Out of curiosity, are you opposed to something like this? I honestly think that looks just as good—if not slightly better—than the current Thunderbolt display.

Why don't monitor manufacturers follow the lead of their laptop-making brethren and just ripoff the Apple aesthetic? Surely the first manufacturer to ship a metal-housed 4/5k display with the right ports and a minimalist aesthetic would clean up? I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

As a sidenote, I was just wondering how awkward it would be to work in an Apple Store given that they currently use a discontinued display for their Mac Pro and Mini.

And I wonder how they will show off those mac pros and minis moving forward when 4/5k starts being the norm... with those LG monitors?

The next-gen Apple Store layouts don’t lend themselves to non-integrated desktop computers. I wager headless Macs—niche as they are—will become online-only purchases, before they’re phased out completely in a couple of years.
