It’s visually pleasing but not sure about the usability.

What exactly do you mean? It's a simple site with about 6 pages, a clearly defined navigation and no content hidden away behind anything.

Be curious to know what sort of usability issues it has.

First of all, try to navigate through screen reader.

A web studio with such focus on visual appeal could squeeze remaining 5% and implement that too. Not semantic nav button, has no tab-index nor it’s a native focus element.

Second, it does scroll jack content on subpages. I’d prefer more content and less shenanigans on sub pages.

Third, I cannot go to another route unless animation is finished. Clicks are prevented.

To you and Russ Brown, this website is visually appealing without any doubt. If it’s main goal is to impress clients, it surely can. However, if all it takes to impress this community is some SVG animation, I should reconsider writing comments like this.

          Ok mate.

Given its a creative web studio, I think its safe to say its sole aim is to impress clients. Clients tend to not be as impressed with talk of semantic html as they do absolutely beautiful animations. Thats not to say those things aren't important but for a studio selling their services to 'normals' its a smart move.

Putting all that aside, lighten up! Everything is not a usability study. taking snide shots at commenters who are appreciating someones work, is that really you?

Man, statements like this really bug me.

He simply mentioned usability and then went on to talk about accessibility – so what? It might not be the most important thing to the majority of site's viewers (I fully agree with you there), but it's still valid criticism.

Replying "Come on dude", telling him to "lighten up" and accuse him of "taking snide shots" is incredibly juvenile.

Accessibility is fundamental. It can be achieved alongside the beautiful animation seen here. It seems like you can't mention some of these issues on DN without someone jumping down your throat.

            Now...

My personal opinion is that we should practise what we preach. I.e. if we advocate good accessibility for our clients, or for the web in general, we should make damn sure our own sites meet that standard.

QFT. Except I'd say it's "very credibly juvenile" for the DN community sometimes. A whisper of critique and the place gets real messy, real fast.

I never created a Dribbble account because of the vast sea of empty, zero-critique comments. "Great job!" "Looks amazing!" — this does nothing for artists but inflate their pride — let's be honest, that's the last thing we need. (Or at least that's the case for yours truly. :)

It's hard to get tone & inflection through text on the web, so a statement like

It’s visually pleasing but not sure about the usability.

can come off with a certain edge, intended or not. But this statement embodies so much of what I wish I found on DN: "This is great work for these reasons. This could be improved in these ways." In other words, true critique.

Let's all do our best to not read in to comments but instead try to get to the heart of them. "What do you mean by that / can you explain in more detail?" is a great place to start. (Props to James Young's level reply!)

Like Duncan I think you've misunderstood my comment.

He made a slightly frustrated comment about the community being easy to impress and I thought that was a bit unnecessary given we were appreciating what is undoubtedly a quite beautiful website.

I think you've misunderstood me here, my comment about "lighten up" and "snide shots" was directed at the statement:

"However, if all it takes to impress this community is some SVG animation, I should reconsider writing comments like this."

Which seemed like he was taking the whole thing a little too seriously.

Oh, I see where you're coming from now. Reading back, I think he was put on the defensive after your first reply.

But I'll let myself out ;)

            What are you talking about?

            taking snide shots at commenters

Just because you take personal offense to someone disagreeing with your opinion doesn't mean they are taking snide shots at you. If anyone needs to lighten up, it's you.

I didn't take any offence at anyone, nor did I ever really share an opinion, I was talking about this comment:

"However, if all it takes to impress this community is some SVG animation, I should reconsider writing comments like this."

              all good?

Beautiful animations, but the it's all flash and little substance unfortunately. I seemed to spend a lot of time clicking, watching and waiting for very little informative content – and it hits all the agency-site clichés in terms of functionality.

I feel like what they really wanted me to do was watch a video or animated slideshow, rather than use a website.

Here is a quick deconstruction of the site if anyone is interested.

    Waaark.com website deconstruction

    Used plugins

Most of the effects are created in After Effects and exported to SVG/JS animations. Some of the animations are hand-coded using GreenSock.
