I can't stand drawing anything pixel-by-pixel and I have no idea how to even visualize a concept to do that. Are there templates I can copy/paste for a unique avatar? Is that what other people do?
Or is everyone here on DN just cleverly adept at pixel art?

I totally cheated, I shrunk my gravatar image to 20x20px in the photoshops and traced it.

I created mine in Photoshop, then re-created it in the DN editor. Ditto for my profile pic (which took a lot longer).

There's nothing hard about it, you just need some patience. Although the DN editor can be tricky due to lack of realtime preview - I'd recommend making it in Photoshop first using the pencil tool.
Be bold, have no avatar. Problem solved.
I don't have one cause I don't know how, not cause I'm bold and brash(or belong in the trash)
Fun fact (that I may well be wrong about): if you have no avatar, users can't collapse your comments.

This could be a super silly question but how do you get colour?
you get them based on merit. 100 karma, etc. some you can't really get anymore (sign up for DN before open registration, some LayerVault stuff...)
It'd be great if there were placeholders on your profile telling you what the requirements were or ones that you don't have though. Is there a section for this on the site (anyone) that lists them all out?

Also interested in hearing some techniques. We should do a competition. Or partner with a merchandiser to print them on shirts.
I drew a skull to sate my inner child. I just wanted something that sort of looked like venom also. Unfortunately it's not very creative. The only thing I know is try to go very simple, like designing a flag.
I've seen some very impressive/creative ideas and I'd also like to learn how people have created theirs.

A bit late to the party, but on OS X there's an Apple developer tool called "Pixie" that makes editing pixel art easier on DN.
I’ve been thinking for quite a while to re-draw this ugly st ligature that is my avatar right now, as I am much happier with the last one (ffi). A lot of concept of mine came from early type design (90s and 00s)—how do you create strokes and modulation through optical illusions at small sizes.

MacPaint when I was 4 years old.
I just switched it to my logo, but it used to be some illuminati type shit to match my header. I might switch back cause it was dope. Basically the key is to get really bored and also try to plan the design out ahead of time (don't wait til your nearly finished to realize it's going to be off center).
