      Because of it's simplicity and effectiveness, but mostly because of nvALT.

  Whoa. I just use Evernote for plaintext. The UI drives me crazy, and I don't enjoy writing in it. Trying Simplenote and it's beautiful. Thanks!

I beta tested Alternote and there were some pretty distracting UI bugs, but if those are fixed, it's a nice alternative! Not sure I can justify paying money for an alternative to a product I already like.
