That URL though.
wow, just noticed that. goddamn ICANN
I always wondered what the reasoning behind the Netflix UI is, whether or not the experience is designed 'badly' to encourage people to watch movies that they get more money from per stream.
It's recommendation engine is awful.
I'm not on the streaming UI team, but I do know that XD is heavily driven by A/B tests and conversions trumps visuals at the product level. A lot of the assets are artwork and the team tries to stay minimal around that.
We also don't make money 'per stream' per se. We don't serve ads. All of our money is made off # of subs so we technically lose money per stream, but hopefully the content we acquire/produce is good enough to offset those streaming operational losses with new monthly subs.
that's very interesting, thanks!
I guess I'd just prefer it to be a very personal experience, which I think it currently struggles with due to very basic algorithms (recommending by genre or basic description or same actors rather than 'people that watched this also enjoyed:)
I also imagine with conversions trumping visuals this means that it caters very much for the person that doesn't actually want to browse at all (parents for example) and want in fact to get something going as soon as possible, for which the current UI works very well.
How do you deal with Netflix haters?
I know that every popular service has a few haters but I don't see how Netflix having one that's vocal or large enough to be worth mentioning.
You should come to France.
