Ask DN: Are you using a Wacom Cintiq?

Just tried the Astropad with my ipad. Interesting but that doesn't works fast enough.

This reminded me about the Cintiq, that could help to design icons faster.

Any feedback about using it?

    Cintiq is amazing for doing hand-drawn linework, painting & precision. Perfect companion tool for digital illustrators but I think it would be overkill for your style. For geometric, grid-based vector work I always disconnect my cintiq and just use the trackpad. An intuos would be a better starting point at 1/8th of the price. Cintiq is just a costly piece of equipment (and is very prone to breaking / needing repair - thank god for the 2 year warranty).

    That said, I'm on mine 6-8 hours a day. It's a powerful piece of hardware and can seriously speed up your workflow.

    A little off-topic perhaps, but could I ask you to elaborate a little on your experiences with Astropad? I was gonna buy an iPad (+ stylus, app) for it, but you sound dissatisfied with it so I'd be incredibly grateful if you could elaborate.

      I don't know if its worth buying an ipad for but for simple stuff so far the Astropad seems to work well enough for me.

      Im not doing any illustration or anything though.. just tried some pen tool stuff.

      I also have the pencil by fiftythree which isnt supported yet so it should get even better as long as they update like they say they plan to.

      I've made a quick try, and in my case (with ipad 2) it was slow. And anyway an ipad screen is very small, cannot imagine working with illustrator on the ipad, just the panels will take all the space!

    Which kind of icons? Pure vector? Yes, Cintiq is a great gfx tablet if you want to work on pixel perfect icons on grid with zoom. Pen is precise and you can configure buttons on tablet for shortcuts. I have for ex. zoom in/out, add/remove points etc. Additionaly you have real pen pressure.
