Your experience with the 5k iMac?

over 8 years ago from , http://meet-cristian.com

Has anyone purchased the new 5k iMac and if so what is your experience with it? I am worried it won't be powerful enough to handle all of those pixels well while under stress.

What is working on UI like? Any screenshots from owners?

Thanks.

I picked up a 5K here in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam for my home office on the grey market. Unfortunately, they only bring in the base models, so that's what I got, unless I wanted to go through Singapore for a custom one and wait 8 weeks.

I'm going to upgrade the memory, but haven't seen any reason to yet.

It's blazing fast as is at the moment.

    I love working on it.

Just the crispness of the text alone makes my day.

I primarily work in Sketch all day as well. Sketch looks fantastic on the 5K and blazes on it.

Even with a display this large, I do find myself wanting another display. I plan on pairing this with a Thunderbolt display, which I'll probably pick up this weekend.

I like the hyper-focus of an application up on one screen (the 5K) and the ability to glance at reference material on another.

    Here's my work in progress:

Saw it in an Apple store. Dreamt about it.

I'm worried about that retina screen and doing web design work on it. It seems to be not worth the trouble it would cause. Even just sending a screenshot to someone would be enormous.

IMHO, sending screenshots @2x resolution to clients and such should be your last concern - it's like sending high dpi pictures to friends and family.

OTOH, @2x resolution and working with clear and crisp text is such a joy - especially if you are coding up text heavy web design.

A week ago I replaced my Late-2010 MBP 17" with a maxed out iMac 5k.

It's huge. I had to rework my standing desk to make it fit. Coming from the MBP, the difference in screen real estate is insane. It's also significantly more powerful.

I don't have any substantial design screenshots to share, but I'm now able to run multiple VMs simultaneously, and easily keep code, spec, and browser all on screen at the same time.

    It's been great.

We use them at work for our UI/Web Design in combination with Sketch.

It’s amazing and plenty fast. Hard to work on anything else after designing natively in retina.

It's awesome. Get the 4G video card. I use sketch on it 8 hours a day, watch video and use Adobe tools. Illustrator is a big laggy when scrolling large files with 800 icons. But every other app screams. I really love it.

AFAIK, Win8 support for HiDPi screens are less than optimal. Even though some things might work, it won't be super seamless like OS X. Having experience of running a Linux PC with a 60inch TV in a living room for gaming (mainly emulation,) among other things, it sucks to have to squint at some apps in order to use them. Luckily, Linux has better, although not perfect, HiDPi support.

    Love it.

Fastest mac I've ever owned (i7 32GB RAM, max out graphics and using 3TB Fusion drive within).

Sadly, It's a personal purchase which means I am not using it heavily for work purpose (at work I also use an Mid 2010 iMac).

I can compare the itch for a retina iMac to a boner indulged with a 5 star hooker.
