AskDN: Need advice on charging for project

over 8 years ago from , Designer @ SAP

Hi all, I was recently approached by a developer I worked with for a small iOS game project.

About me : - freelance rate 15$/hour - Haven't done iOS game design before

About the project: - company logo (he want 3 designs) - "some graphics for a simple iPhone trivia game" - website design for this app

Question: - Should I accept this project if I never done game design before? I feel like not so confident about this. - If I charge by project, how much should I charge?

Thanks a lot!

If you think you're up to it, you should take it. Heck, even if you think it's going to be really hard and you're not sure you'll be able to do it, take it. Challenges are the best way to develop skill, and this seems like a good challenge. If the latter aforementioned case is true, it will be even more of a challenge, and you stand to learn even more from it, whether or not you succeed. Something I've heard a lot goes along the lines of "you can learn from your successes, but you can become an expert from your failures."

For charging, I personally would charge your normal rate. If you're thinking you should charge less since you're not as experienced, your time is worth your normal rate no matter what. If you're thinking you should charge more since you're doing something above and beyond, have a damn good reason to present the client why you're charging him more than your baseline. If you have a good reason, you know you're doing the right thing.
