List your 5 favorite designers or illustrators. Dribbble links only.
'Dribbble links only'
Don't be a jerk.
You need to rephrase your question. 'Name your favourite 5 posters on dribbble' would be fair enough. But asking people to name their 5 favourite designers and assuming they post on dribbble is ridiculous.
We need to start looking past login screens and icon sets if we want to talk properly about design.
Either post designers you're following on dribbble or don't. But don't post in a thread being a melodramatic ass. That's not acceptable here.
Whoa, Allan. I'm sorry, but I thought this was a site where we could discuss stuff about design? And it strikes me as though Paul is doing exactly that? How is, "We need to start looking past login screens and icon sets if we want to talk properly about design" melodramatic? I think it's fair enough, and something worth seriously talking about.
I learned a few weeks back that this site isn't about discussion of design philosophy, concepts, design critique, the role of design in our world, design interactions and human behavior, basically what Design really is, but more about dribbble shots, links to new apps, and photoshop scripts.
Sometimes it feels as though it's up to the community to change that, but increasingly it is unclear whether Allan simply wants this to be a space for others to share his interests and values. Yes, this is a "private" space and nobody is compelled to use it, but Allan, I wish you would consider either bringing somebody on to manage this community, or simply explaining outright what you would like this place to be.
You say "That's not acceptable here", but some of us have asked repeatedly to get a handle on what is acceptable. Is what is "acceptable" simply what you happen to deem acceptable at any particular point in time? I'm grateful that you've created this space, but it's difficult to feel as though any of us can claim ownership over it when you're not exactly transparent over how it should operate.
(And by "claim ownership", I simply mean, "Feel comfortable in").
Derision is not acceptable... unless it's me calling you out :)
By all means, discuss design at a high level. In a thread where I ask for 5 links from your favorite dribbble profiles, let's not get heated that dribbble doesn't encompass the entire design world.
Most threads in the worst corners of the internet devolve into nitpicking and circular arguments over semantics. Let's be above that and keep with the spirit of this place — be nice and be thoughtful. Don't like dribbble? No need to complain.
Don't let the G in your username become like the G in PG. He was right when he said that "We need to start looking past login screens and icon sets if we want to talk properly about design.".
And we all love digital and web here, but having someone talking about other types of design is good, let's not kick them away.
Allan, I think the more general issue is that, with only one moderator, there's nobody to moderate the mod! That may sound rude, but nobody's perfect, and online communities with only one mod tend to move toward autocracies in which the moderator is above criticism. I just hope you see the issue. If there were multiple moderators on this site (are there?), you'd have a situation in which everybody were accountable, which is I think how every well-greased community should function.
Allan this response is pretty gross, and the thread title/request is inherently confusing. Almost to the point of trollbait. As others have said, I can't think of a single of my favorite designers who are on Dribbble.
Also, this may have been said already, but the issue would be solved by simply rephrasing the request to "Who are your favorite designers on Dribbble?"
"If it's not on Dribbble it's not design." Le Sigh.
My 5 favourite designers and illustrators aren't on Dribbble.
Watch out, guys, we've got a badass over here.
Pardon me? I just said my favourite designers aren't on Dribbble, links to which is what the post asked for. Tell me how specifically that makes me a "badass"?
Post links to your favorite designers anyway!
So just to clarify...
Not Design: http://
Can't reply to the actual comment as on the phone, but if your going to play the moderator card, I'll respectfully duck out of your thread.
By the by, you have now called me an ass and a jerk for questioning the validity of making dribbble a prerequisite yet it's my behaviour that is unacceptable?
(I just noticed that your original comment has the highest up-votes in this thread.)
Love Fuzzco! They're based here in Charleston, SC. Had lunch with Allan and the founders not too long ago.
My old crew :) Most talented group of designers & swell people I've ever had a chance to work with.
THAT'S 6 DESIGNERS, DISQUALIFIED!
Don't know anything about any of these people except Oronoz who is a friend of mine. Just clicked through my following list and picked out 5 people whose work I always find interesting:
+1 on turnleftishome, some of the best & most original work I've ever seen. Love his style.
Fuck this, the only designer I need is Benjamin De Cock. ;)
I understand why people are saying great designers need not be on Dribbble, but I would also like to point out that when I am deciding if someone is a great designer, I often check it they're on Dribbble. Being on there shows you know what you're doing, almost like being endorsed by the community, verifying you.
I started a 2nd thread about this. I'd like to see folks' links independent of Dribbble mandate: https://news.layervault.com/stories/2280-ask-dn-favorite-design-talent-ptii
Mason Yarnell for his work on Mixpanel: http://dribbble.com/yarnell
