Designer News has always impressed me with the quality of links being shared. Inspiring articles and genuinely interesting industry news were the order of the day, and they still are - thankfully. However, the recent glut of self-promotional links is really spoiling the fun. Can something be done about this, please?
Dribbble Community Manager here. I fully concur: Dribbble shots, as much as I love them, usually aren't newsworthy. Let's focus on actual news for DN, and keep self-promotion to Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, etc. :)
I'll sink stuff that isn't high quality and still hits the homepage. If you really want to see good stuff float and bad stuff sink, start posting and upvoting more.
Good to know.
Are there plans for a downvote button?
100% Agree. Dribbble is already a platform for sharing one's own design work. We don't need other channels for people to promote their Dribbble work.
For me, when I see a Dribbble shot here it often isn't Designer "News", its just design.
My suggestion would be instead of banning all Dribbble links, we should encourage posting more news related links. If a Dribbble shot is also design news then its ok.
Agreed. Banning a URL is too heavy-handed, but it does seem that self-promo Dribbble links are a particular problem for the DN feed.
I completely agree. Using DN as a promo tool for Dribbble makes no sense and defeats the purpose of both platforms.
Should there be a downvote feature? :)
I honestly think the downvote feature takes away from the positivity the upvotes and karma bring to the community honestly. However, the "sinking" that will be done by allan is a good one and we just have to be sure we upvote what we like to ensure crappy stuff sinks :D
