Is it just me, or does the new messenger look like Skype?(newsroom.fb.com)

Latest available usage statistics for Facebook Messenger alone report 1.2 billion monthly users.

There's certainly a privacy conversation being had, but to suggest that Messenger doesn't matter because your circle doesn't use it is absurd.

It was a bit of a tongue-in-cheek reply in the first place, and you could easily have started with the Messenger user numbers and began a more interesting conversation instead of whatever this was.

Considering there is always that one person who will only communicate through a different service, it forces people to occasionally use a chat app they don't normally use. For example I really don't like Google Hangouts and don't use it by choice, but since there is one small group of friends who will only use Hangouts, I am considered a MAU by Google. Same goes for Facebook Messenger.

Another example of how such numbers can be misleading is what Messenger does when you friend someone on Facebook. Messenger pops up a notification as if it is coming from that person, but when you open the app it's just a prompt saying that you should start chatting with them on Messenger. Yet that process of opening the app and opening one conversation makes me a MAU for Messenger.
