I just got my email from Sketch saying my yearly license was up and would I like to renew.

With this news from Figma I might not renew...

Well, the good thing with Sketch is you can still use the latest version you paid for and it runs locally.

Figma looks great and I really admire the engineering skills behind it - but I feel uneasy not being able to properly work offline, i.e. having a proper desktop app with local files (not just the electron app connecting to your online repository).

If Figma would be able to do both then I'd seriously consider it.

Agreed, although I honestly can't think of the last time I didn't have a web connection other than TWC/Spectrum going down now and then for a few hours.

I'm sure most of the time it will be OK, but there will be one moment where you need to deliver something urgently, but then suddenly Figma's cloud provider or their servers are down or whatever and you're stuck.

With a desktop app and offline capability this couldn't happen and you have peace of mind.

What about working on airplanes? Trains? etc.

Not relevant to me since I enjoy relaxing during travel but I can see how that would be an issue for some people. Still if you open the document before losing connection you can keep working on it and just resync when you reconnect.
